We as florists or event designers realise that you are very excited to get your wedding underway ,and start the planning process of the wedding of your dreams. Some of you have folders filled with photographs and color swatches, as you have waited for this day since you were a little girl,  while others don’t have these things as you never really thought of how your wedding would look when the day eventually arrived.
So before you head to your first design appointment there are a few things you need to take with you. Firstly it’s best if you should have chosen the  locations of both the ceremony and the reception sites. Also photographs are really helpful should the location be more unique, in case the designer isn’t familiar with it. Beyond that, you need to have already selected your gown and those of the bridesmaids, as the fashion of the wedding helps us to determine the overall look of the wedding. Remember a wedding, unlike a party, has a look not a theme.
Beyond the gowns it is helpful to look through magazines and tear out pages of things that appeal to you, and write on the page what caught your eye in the photograph. Is it the flower variety, the color palette, container or simply the  overall effect that you love. Color swatches and photographs of the gowns are also a great help and descriptions are also helpful. We as designers, have vivid imaginations and any professional should be familiar with the popular wedding gown designers, whether it is Ann Barge, Amsale, Priscilla of Boston, Demetrios or someone else.
You may have a favorite flower in mind or want to use a variety of flower that your mother or grandmother carried in their bouquet. Some girls want their whole bouquet to be replicated, so in this instance a photograph is very important.  On the flip side it is as important to know of flowers that you DON’T want or if you or someone in your wedding party have floral allergies . Nothing worse than a bridesmaid walking down the aisle with a runny rose or swollen, red eyes.
When choosing a florist or event designer make sure this person is a qualified professional and  has a knowlege of flowers and their life expectancy and uniqueness. You don’t want them to use a flower you love,that they have no experience in using, as you don’t want to have dead flowers in your photographs !! Some flowers do not do well in hand tied bouquets, as well as some are not suitable as boutonnieres.  In saying this, it is a good idea to ask how many years experience they have in working with flowers.  Five years would be a good rule of thumb.  It is also good to ask if they have any affiliations to Industry Associations, such as Society of American Florists, American Institute of Floral Designers or local and State organizations such as a State Floral Association.  Not that is it absolutely necessary for them to belong, but people who do belong have at least had some type of vetting, depending on which association. Some you can pay to be a member of and they just want to make sure you are *in good standing* while others require very stringent exams and qualifications to join.
Some of this will depend on your budget also.  If you are not as concerned with having really amazing flowers compared to something more inexpensive and generic, then it’s probable you don’t require an AIFD Designer on staff of the floral company you choose to use.  So there are many equations to consider.   Also check out the company on The Better Business Bureau to make sure they have no unsolved discrepancies on their report.  You can also check out most of them on websites like www.weddingwire.com

or similar sites.   However just remember, there are always two sides to every story, and a disgruntled bride may have made a mountain out of a molehill… so take all online reports with a grain of salt.  But the main thing to remember is to go to your appointment organized, ready to make use of the professionals time and ideas, and come out of it feeling excited that you have found a perfect match for your wedding.
