One of the most important aspects of shooting a wedding film is the lighting. While ambient lighting is beautiful when placed around the room, and candlelight is romantic, these elements of lighting alone can make shooting a wedding film very difficult.  Although a photographer has a flash for dark rooms, a good videographer has to use the light in the room to capture the details. Some film companies bring in lighting to make the event easier to shoot, but we believe that this not only ruins the design the couple has worked so hard to execute but also draws attention away from the bride and groom and on to the film team.  This is not where the attention should be on your wedding day.  When lighting around the edges of the room is the only lighting, there is often a huge dark area in the middle of the room that is difficult to shoot. This usually includes the dance floor, an important location during the reception.  This forces the filmmaker to use small on-camera lights to be able to shoot the action on the dance floor.  Also, the head table is often placed in front of the ambient lights on the edge of the room.  This creates a scenario in which anyone who is giving a toast at the head table will likely be in silhouette since they are lit from the back with no light in the front. Also important for your wedding film is to remember is that the color of the lighting makes everyone appear to be that color in your wedding film.  If you choose to light your room in pink, everyone in the film will appear pink as well.  A great addition to ambient lighting and candlelight is to bring in moving lights or overhead lights to help fill the room.  Also, an easy way to alleviate the issue is to not turn the overheard lights in the room all of the way off, but instead dim them.  This offers some filler light, but still allows the ambient lighting to do its’ job.  There is no doubt that lighting is a great way to bring ambiance into the room.  When thinking of your wedding film, adding some light will create a better film to cherish for many years.
