The Grand Exit | After I Said Yes

The Grand Exit

One question that always remains near the end of the planning process is “What will our grand exit be like?”  A lot of the decision can rest in the hands of the reception location.  Most have quite a few rules about what can and cannot be done.

Most reception locations will allow you to throw rose petals- which makes for a pretty picture and no one can get lit on fire- as they could with sparklers.  As you can tell- I’m not a huge fan of sparklers.  It’s not generally a good idea to hand a lit object to an intoxicated person.  Just be careful of throwing rose petals if they will land on stairs or on any sort of slick surface- as they will just make that surface even more slick.

Confetti can also be fun.  And they now make biodegradable confetti- so you don’t even have to clean it up!  Rice is never done anymore as people have found that if birds eat the rice then their stomach’s can explode… not a pretty picture.

If your reception location is very restrictive and will not let you throw rose petals, confetti, or do sparkers- one fun idea that still makes for good photos is having your guests wave fiber-optic wands.  They come in all sorts of colors and you can get spinning ones too.  It may seem a little juvenile, but trust me, I have used these light up wands for several weddings now- all with great reviews.

Usually most of the items that can be tossed at the bride and groom as they exit the reception are done so as they exit into some sort of fun vehicle.  Depending on what part of the country you live in, or where your reception is held, you can leave in many different types of vehicles.  I have had brides and grooms leave in golf carts, vintage cars, Rolls Royce’s, boats, and even a water taxi!  I think the vehicle you choose to leave in should be fun and reflect your personality and the theme or feel of the evening.

Finally, the most important pieces of advice about a grand exit I can offer is if you don’t have a wedding planner to help organize the grand exit – please make sure you put someone in charge of it.  The band or dj needs to direct the guests to go outside and to also take the rose petals or whatever else that might be used for the grand exit.  Someone needs to pass out the rose petals, wands, or whatever you choose to exit with.  Second, please have whomever is in charge of the exit call the person driving the getaway vehicle and have them pull up to where the bride and groom will be exiting from.  It’s important that the vehicle and driver are ready to go!  And finally, someone needs to line up the guests in two lines going towards the getaway vehicle- if you don’t do this, guests will just stand wherever they want to and the photographer cannot get a great getaway photo.   Have fun!
