Vendors or Artist?

I came across a very good read a few days ago.  (Hat tip to  Brett Culp of Culp Films

and Tribes.

In his blog he states that in an ever increasing service economy we have two types of services one is a vendor and the other is an artist.

Vendors are businesses which sells you a product.  An artist is one which is to be treated much differently. Knowing which one you are hiring is very important because if you treat an artist like a vendor you will not be getting the best from them.  I highly encourage you to read Seth’s complete blog post here.

So how might this apply to planning your wedding?

I believe that when you are planning you really need to decide who are going to be the artist you want for your wedding.  These are the most important people you are going to ask to help you with your wedding.  For example people like your photographer, videographer and  florist may fall into this category.  When you decide the group of artist you truly want to be a part of your wedding you will need to spend time with them so they get a feel for you and your special taste.  As Seth stated, “If you treat an artist like a vendor, you’ll often get mediocre results in return.”  And quite frankly,  artist are not motivated in the same way as a vendor.  We get excited when a client really wants to work with us so that we can provide a truly one-of-a-kind experience.

The vendors for your wedding really don’t work this way.  Quoting from Seth again, “The vendor is agnostic about what’s being sold, and is focused on volume, or at least consistency.”  I the wedding world I believe that the work consistency of the vendor is the most important aspect that you should focus on.

So as you are planning your wedding you may want to take a hard look who is going to be the artist and vendors for you.  This may help you in prioritizing your time and money in a way that helps you create the wedding you always wanted.
